24X CKP Sensor Basic Operating Theory

The 24X crankshaft position (CKP) sensor is located behind the crankshaft pulley (harmonic balancer) on the front of the engine. It's a 3-wire Hall-effect sensor whose job is to let the PCM know the crankshaft's exact position at lower engine speeds.

It does this by sensing the movement of a 24-tooth interrupter ring that's mounted behind the crankshaft pulley. As the crankshaft turns, the blades and windows of the interrupter ring pass through the sensor, causing it to switch its output signal ON and OFF.

Since the interrupter ring has 24 equally spaced blades and windows, the sensor produces 24 ON/OFF pulses for every complete revolution of the crankshaft. This high-resolution signal helps the PCM accurately determine crankshaft position, especially at idle and lower RPM.

The 24X CKP sensor doesn't work alone. The engine also uses a second crankshaft position sensor (3X on 1994-1995 models and 7X on 1996-2005 models). That sensor works together with the ignition control module (ICM) to control ignition timing and help the engine start.

Because the 24X CKP sensor is a Hall-effect sensor, it requires both power and Ground to operate. As the interrupter ring passes through the sensor, it switches its output signal between approximately 0 Volts and battery voltage, creating the digital ON/OFF signal that we'll be testing in this tutorial.
