24X CKP Sensor Basic Operating Theory
The 24X crankshaft position (CKP) sensor is mounted behind the crankshaft pulley (harmonic balancer) on the front of the engine. It's a 3-wire Hall-effect sensor that provides the PCM with precise crankshaft position information, especially while the engine is idling or running at lower RPM.
The sensor monitors a 24-tooth interrupter wheel located behind the crankshaft pulley. As the crankshaft rotates, the teeth and windows of the interrupter wheel pass through the sensor, causing it to switch its output signal between LOW and HIGH voltage.
Since the interrupter wheel has 24 evenly spaced teeth, the sensor produces 24 digital pulses for every complete revolution of the crankshaft. This high-resolution signal allows the PCM to monitor crankshaft position much more accurately than the 3X CKP sensor alone.
The 24X CKP sensor works together with the engine's 3X CKP sensor and the ignition control module (ICM). The 3X CKP sensor provides the information needed for ignition during cranking and startup, while the 24X CKP sensor provides the PCM with the higher-resolution signal it needs once the engine is running.
Since it's a Hall-effect sensor, the 24X CKP sensor requires both power and Ground to operate. As the interrupter wheel rotates through the sensor, it switches its output between approximately 0 Volts and battery voltage, creating the digital signal you'll test in the following tutorial.
