24X CKP Sensor Circuit Wiring Diagram (1996, 1997 3.1L V6 Buick Century)

APPLIES TO: This 24X CKP sensor circuit wiring diagram applies to the following vehicles:

  • 3.1L V6 Buick Century: 1996, 1997.

How The 24X CKP Sensor Works

The 24X crankshaft position sensor is installed behind the harmonic balancer on the front of the engine. It's a 3-wire Hall-effect sensor that sends a high-resolution crankshaft position signal directly to the PCM.

As the crankshaft turns, a 24-tooth interrupter wheel passes through the sensor. Every tooth and window causes the sensor to switch its signal ON and OFF.

Because the interrupter wheel contains 24 evenly spaced teeth, the sensor generates 24 ON/OFF pulses during each revolution of the crankshaft. This allows the PCM to accurately determine crankshaft position and engine speed at lower RPM.

The engine also uses a separate 7X crankshaft position sensor. The ignition control module (ICM) uses the 7X sensor to control ignition during cranking and startup, while the PCM uses the 24X sensor's higher-resolution signal for engine management.

Unlike the 7X CKP sensor, the 24X sensor requires an external power supply and Ground. Its output switches between approximately 0 Volts and battery voltage, producing the digital waveform that's tested in the tutorial below.
