24X CKP Sensor Basic Operating Theory

The 24X crankshaft position (CKP) sensor is located behind the harmonic balancer at the front of the engine. It's a 3-wire Hall-effect sensor that provides the PCM with an accurate crankshaft position signal.

The sensor works by detecting the 24-tooth interrupter wheel that rotates with the crankshaft. As each tooth and window passes through the sensor, its output switches between LOW and HIGH voltage.

This creates 24 digital pulses for every revolution of the crankshaft, allowing the PCM to precisely monitor crankshaft position and engine speed, particularly at idle and lower engine speeds.

The engine also relies on a separate 7X CKP sensor connected to the ignition control module (ICM). While the 7X sensor is responsible for providing the information needed to begin firing the ignition coils during cranking, the 24X sensor supplies the PCM with the higher-resolution signal it needs for precise engine management.

Because the 24X CKP sensor is a Hall-effect sensor, it requires both power and Ground. Its output alternates between approximately 0 Volts and battery voltage, creating the digital signal you'll test in the following tutorial.
