Basic Operating Theory Of The Fuel Pump Relay
The PCM controls the operation of the electric fuel pump through the fuel pump relay. Rather than powering the fuel pump directly, it energizes the relay whenever fuel pressure is needed.
When you first switch the ignition key to the ON position, the PCM energizes the relay for about 2 seconds. This allows the fuel pump to pressurize the fuel system before the engine is cranked.
If the engine doesn't start during the prime cycle, the PCM turns the relay OFF. After the engine begins cranking and the PCM receives crankshaft position information, it energizes the relay again so the fuel pump runs continuously.
This strategy is also an important safety feature. If the engine stops running for any reason, the PCM removes power from the relay, preventing the fuel pump from continuing to pump fuel.
A faulty relay can prevent the fuel pump from operating, resulting in a no-start condition or intermittent stalling.
