Basic Operating Theory Of The Fuel Pump Relay

The fuel pump relay allows the PCM (fuel injection computer) to control when battery power is sent to the in-tank fuel pump.

When you first turn the ignition key to the ON position, the PCM energizes the fuel pump relay for about 2 seconds. This briefly runs the fuel pump to build fuel pressure before the engine starts.

If the engine isn't started within those 2 seconds, the PCM switches the relay OFF. As soon as the engine begins cranking and the PCM detects crankshaft position signals, it energizes the relay again, allowing the fuel pump to run continuously.

As long as the PCM continues receiving crankshaft position signals, it keeps the fuel pump relay energized. If those signals stop because the engine stalls or is involved in a collision, the PCM immediately de-energizes the relay and shuts the fuel pump off.

A failed fuel pump relay can prevent the fuel pump from running, causing a crank-but-no-start condition or an engine that starts and then immediately stalls.
