Safety Precautions
Here are some very important safety precautions when testing the wires coming out of the PCM connectors.
- If one or any of the wires on your GM vehicle DO NOT match the color stated in the Pin Out Charts, then you should not use the Pin Out Charts in this article. Why? Because this is the clearest indication that these ARE NOT the Connector Pin Out Charts for your particular vehicle.
- Never probe the front of the connector.
- You should use a wire piercing probe and probe the wire a few inches away from the connector.
- To see what this tool looks like: Wire Piercing Probe.
- You should use a back probe.
- You should use a wire piercing probe and probe the wire a few inches away from the connector.
- This is a FLASH unit and requires reprogramming if replaced with a new one or used one.
PCM Connector Pinout Wire Color Legend
- BLK = Black
- BLU = Blue
- BRN = Brown
- GRN = Green
- GRY = Grey
- ORG = Orange
- PNK = Pink
- PPL = Purple
- RED = Red
- TAN = Tan
- WHT = White
- YEL = Yellow
Some of the wires coming out of the PCM connectors will have a stripe. With these wires, we use a slash to show both colors. For example:
- BLK/WHT = Black with a white stripe.
- ORG/BLK = Orange with a black stripe.
The first color is the main one, and the color after the slash is the stripe.
A few wire colors will have a 'LT' or a 'DK' before the color, like 'LT BLU' or 'DK BLU'. In this cases, the 'LT' refers to the word 'light' and the 'DK' refers to the word 'dark'. For example:
- LT BLU = Light blue.
- LT GRN/BLK = Light green with a black stripe.
- DK GRN/WHT = Dark green with a white stripe.
What Is JL4 And How Do I Find Out If My Van Has It?
The 3-letter JL4 code is known as a Regular Production Option (RPO) and is found on the Service Parts Identification Label (which is usually located on the right front door of the van).
Vans equipped with the JL4 option, such as the 2004 Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana, will have an Electronic Brake Control Module (EBCM) that provides:
- ABS Brakes.
- Dynamic Rear Proportioning (DRP).
- Traction Control System (TCS).
- Vehicle Stability Enhancement System (VSES).
On the 2004 Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana, I've found that the easiest way to determine if it comes with or without the JL4 option is by checking whether it has an electronic throttle body.
So, if your Chevy Express or GMC Savana has an electronic throttle body installed (instead of an old-fashioned mechanical accelerator cable connecting the gas pedal to the throttle), your vehicle has the JL4 option. It will also be equipped with a Traction Control System.
If your van uses a regular mechanical accelerator cable connecting the gas pedal to the throttle, then your van does not have the JL4 option.
You can also check the Service Parts Identification Label on the right front door to see if the JL4 RPO is listed.
