Basic Operating Theory Of The MAF Sensor
The mass airflow (MAF) sensor measures the amount of air entering the engine. The fuel injection computer (PCM) uses this information to calculate how much fuel the engine needs under every operating condition.
Inside the MAF sensor are two heated wires. As air flows through the sensor, it cools these wires. The greater the amount of airflow, the more the wires are cooled.
The MAF sensor continuously monitors this cooling effect and converts it into a digital frequency (Hertz) signal that it sends to the PCM. As engine airflow increases, the frequency of the signal increases. As airflow decreases, the frequency decreases.
On the 1994-1995 3.1L V6 Buick Century, the PCM uses this MAF signal as one of its primary inputs for calculating fuel injector pulse width. An inaccurate or missing MAF signal can cause a variety of driveability problems, including poor acceleration, rough idle, hard starting, increased fuel consumption, and an illuminated check engine light.
One of the nice things about this MAF sensor is that you don't need an expensive scan tool to verify that it's working. Since it produces a frequency (Hz) signal, you can test its output with a digital multimeter that has a Hertz (Hz) function. As you accelerate the engine, the frequency reading should increase. As the engine returns to idle, the frequency should decrease.
