Cylinder Head Bolt Tightening Sequence (1997, 1998, 1999 5.4L V8 Ford E150, E250, E350)

The illustration above shows the cylinder head bolt tightening sequence.

NOTE: Use new cylinder head bolts. The 5.4L V8 engine uses torque-to-yield (TTY) cylinder head bolts and are not reusable.

Before installing the new cylinder head bolts, oil the underneath of the head bolt with engine oil. This is the part of the bolt that makes contact with the cylinder head.

IMPORTANT: Do not oil the cylinder head bolt threads.

NOTE: Install the cylinder head gasket without any type of sealer.

Cylinder Head Torque Specifications
Step 1 28-31 Ft. Lbs. (37-43 N.m) NOTE: Bolts must be tightened in sequence.
Step 2 Additional 85°- 95°
Step 3 Loosen all bolts 1 full turn (360°) - NOTE: Loosen in sequence.
Step 4 28-31 Ft. Lbs. (37-43 N.m)
Step 5 Additional 85°- 95°
Step 6 Additional 85°- 95°
