How To Test The CMP Sensor (1995-1998 1.5L Toyota Tercel)

TEST 2: Testing The CMP Sensor's Output With A Multimeter

Testing The CMP Sensor's Output With A Multimeter. How To Test The CMP Sensor (1995, 1996, 1997, 1998 1.5L Toyota Tercel)

When the engine is running, the camshaft position (CMP) sensor produces an AC voltage output.

You and I can check this AC voltage output with a multimeter in Volts AC mode (and with the engine cranking).

If the CMP sensor is functioning correctly, it should output an AC voltage of about 0.4 to 1.2 Volts AC as you crank the engine.

If the CMP is bad, your multimeter will report 0 AC volts as the engine is cranking.

IMPORTANT: Your Toyota Tercel's battery should be fully charged before commencing this test.

These are the test steps:

  1. 1

Disconnect the ignition coils from their electrical connectors.

This is a safety precaution to keep the engine from starting during the CMP sensor test.

  2. 2

Disconnect the CMP sensor from its electrical connector.

LOCATION: The CMP sensor is located on the side of the cylinder head facing the transaxle (below the valve cover and above the coolant thermostat outlet).

  3. 3

Place your multimeter in Volts AC mode.

  4. 4

With your multimeter test leads, probe the male spade terminals of the CMP sensor's connector.

IMPORTANT: You're probing the male spade terminals of the CMP sensor itself and not the female terminals of the engine wiring harness connector.

  5. 5

Have a helper crank the engine as you observe the multimeter.

CAUTION: Be careful and stay alert as the engine is cranking.

  6. 6

The multimeter should report an AC voltage that will oscillate somewhere around 0.4 to 1.2 Volts AC.

Let's take a look at what your test results mean:

CASE 1: The multimeter reported the indicated AC voltage. This test result confirms that the CMP sensor is functioning correctly.

CASE 2: The multimeter reported 0 AC voltage. This test result confirms that the camshaft position sensor is bad and needs replacement.
