1996-1998 Crank Sensor Circuit Diagram (Dodge 3.9L, 5.2L, 5.9L)

Crankshaft Position Sensor Wiring Diagram

Crankshaft Position Sensor Wiring Diagram (1996, 1997, 1998 3.9L, 5.2L, 5.9L Dodge Ram Pickup, Ram Van, Dakota)

NOTE: The illlustrations and info in this page apply only to 1996, 1997, 1998 Dodge Ram pickups, vans, and Dakota with a 3.9L, 5.2L or 5.9L gasoline engine (that use the 3 connector PCM).

A wiring diagram makes it easier to check for shorts to Ground or power and of course, check for continuity between the crank sensor and the PCM.

The following tutorial may be of help when testing the actual crank sensor (to see if it's creating a signal, or not, with a multimeter):

Crankshaft Position Sensor Diagnostic/Troubleshooting Notes:

The PCM provides a sensor Ground on the BLK/LT BLU wire to a total of 11 components (including the crankshaft position sensor).

If you're testing for a short to Ground, a short to power, or an open in this circuit, you'll need to unplug all of the sensors/components this sensor Ground wire connects to.

Crankshaft Position Sensor Troubleshooting Notes:

The PCM provides 5 Volts DC on the PPL/WHT wire to a total of 4 components (including the crankshaft position sensor).

If you're testing for a short to Ground, a short to power, or an open in this circuit, you'll need to unplug all of the sensors/components this 5 Volt supply wire connects to.

Where To Buy The Crank Sensor And Save

You can find the crankshaft position sensor in any auto parts store. But buying it online for a whole lot cheaper than somewhere local.

The following links will help you comparison shop for the crank sensor:

Will the above crank sensor fit your particular Dodge Ram pickup? Don't worry, once you get to the site they'll make sure it fits (by asking you the specifics of your particular vehicle). If it doesn't fit, they'll find you the right one.
